Project, Placements and Torture

From the title, you may have already guessed what I am about to talk about… PICT obviously!

Mid-June, third year exams over, stepped into the last year of my engineering life. Thought life would be cool now, will have more time for myself, but over time I realized, I couldn’t have been more wrong.
It all started with a fight to get project sponsorships. Alumni groups, and few companies came with their own respective selection methods to provide us with guides for our projects. I got guidance under one of the prestigious groups and my friends who were not in my project group got into a big-wig company for project, with a heavy stipend to assist in their work. Sometimes, there is this dilemma, money or good project, or if when greedy, both! But going by the Heisenberg’s principle, it is either one, anyone.

All this didn’t constitute the torture that I was to say. The real thing was to follow.
Placements, for which our college is so well-known, started, and with that, so did the actual college semester, from July. Now, we have been in PICT for last three years and have seen a lot of radical changes in the working of the college, and its administration.

In short, First year was chill, but as we were new, and not so accustomed to the ongoings, we didn’t dare challenge anything.

Second year, was by far the best, by means of curriculum too, and other things too.

Third year was when suddenly the admins got wings, and also decided to clip ours at the same time. My attendance in the first sem TE was as much as I had in the whole of the second year! Thanks to the infamous fine system.

Now, the fourth, and the canary has turned into a full-fledged vulture. It’s turned into a school now. Oh, had I joined just one year before :|

So what’s new? We cannot reach college even a min late, which has been relaxed to 5 min, but yeah, like that’s an helluva buffer, ain’t it? And not that we are sent off, which would have been a pleasure, instead, we are dumped into the library reading hall, which implies no attendance. So much for punctuality. I mean, it’s the last year; we want to attend college, and then this. I wonder when a faculty arrives late, what may be the proceedings.

An I-card is necessary in college premises, which is perfectly justified. What doesn’t make sense, is that you cannot have it in your bag, bille ki tarah, you have to tag it along all time. And neither can you wear it and keep the card in your shirt side pocket. No sir. Keep it hanging all day. Yes, woof!

No mobile phones in college premises. The premises outside the classroom! Faculty using phones inside lecture rooms is supposedly okay (!), but, us students aren’t privileged enough to use them even outside classrooms, in the break time.

If attendance is less (less, being a highly relative term), then prepare to be detained, go to the principal and HoD for every other mistake, and many similar threatening has become the norm. There is also the letter from the parents. You arrive late. Late, in the sense, ki you enter the class just behind the faculty, who himself is late technically. Why are you late? Bring a letter from your parents, explaining the reason for this miniscule delay. Ah, discipline!

If any senior is reading this, you may be realizing what the scenario is, as a whole.

College is supposed to be the changeover period, when a certain professional attitude is developed, and not all this. If anything, the students would be deviated off-course, and end up emphasizing on things that are not going to matter, or affect their performance. That would have an indirect effect on projects and quality of students.

Placements are going superb. No two things about it; the college is known for it. We just hope the management gets its things right, coz, right now, students aren’t seen engineering, rather being type-casted into impassive, robotic products.

*Of course, it is an intensely personal view, no hard feelings, or any judgments whatsoever.

Peace :-)

Finally we are B.E

Its was 13th June, exams over and now we are seniors in this college :D

Two days before the seniors had their last fight with the P.U and now they are free birds. It was fun watching them playing with colors and scribbling on each other tee shirt, i was just wondering when will i get away from this university.

Its been three years we are here and what everyone is waiting for, is this day, the day when we will leave this place. But its not so, people don't like changes in their life. I see when students come in their first year they don't like this place (change) and when they leave the place they again don't like it (change), because this is the time when you make friends who counts and this is the your "alma mater".

Most of the seniors are joining industry and there are few who are going for masters. But there are many in our batch who would be opting for masters. One senior got into Google, and  one in Microsoft, big achievement for college. Not to miss 46 companies visited campus this year and average placement was close to 4-4.2 LPA (not bad). J.P Morgan and Morgan Stanley were attraction this year, hope they come next year too. From abroad only one company visited campus, Rakuten from Japan.

Exams are over now but Project Sponsorships, Placements, Aptitude Preparation is new thing between third grade students, most of them haven't left for home this time.

Anyways i am studying for placements and hope you too,, for seniors " adiós ".

8051 Simulator

For many students of TE Comp. Sci. and others too this could be useful, a 8051 simulator. There are many available on internet but many of them don't work. I tried this and it worked well for me.
Download 8051 simulator here
Follow simple steps given in the install.txt file in the download.

After that to make a new project follow these simple steps:-
1. Open keil uvision 3 from startup.

2. Project->New uVision Project

3. Give it a name and save.

4. Select IC Atmel 89C51, looks good for our 8051 simulation. You can choose the one you want, details about it are given on right hand side.

5. Press OK.

6. File->NEW

7. A text file will open. Write your asm code here and save it as ".asm"

8. Add the saved file to the project we just created on the left, using right click and add file. You need to show all files in order to see ".asm" files , the default is ".c" files.
For eg.
MOV R0,#04
MOV A,#01
LABEL:
MOV B,R0
MUL AB
DJNZ R0,LABEL
RET
END
This was my code for Factorial of 4, you can see some changes than what we use to write on kit. a) we have to use label here instead of address for jump
b) register B which has address F0 is also changed on line 4.

9. Project-> Translate Current File
Project-> Build Target File
Project-> Rebuild all Target File
This will show you errors if any in the bottom of the software.

10. Go to debug and press start debugging session.

11. Debug->Run
You can see all the registers changing on the left.
In my program the register 'a' got a value 0x18 i.e 24 .. factorial of 4.

Well this is kinda useful for practicing 8051 extra assignment list. You can explore more.. like while in debugging mode you can see the timer of the micro controller and even SCON and SBUF register values. ( goto peripherals and select what you need).

Still have a doubt feel free to ask a question. Only 8051 related queries please.

Undiscovered places in pune..

After 2.5 years in Pune (esp. PICT) i can tell you now few places which many of the other people might not have visited , even you can add more to it i know but its my post so, my places!

1. Kata Kirrr..
-Famous For: Misal pav ( its the only thing available there)
If its Sunday please change your plan and also if the time if more than 4pm. They make the stuff only once in morning, and serve till its over.
Normal Cost: 45-50 Rs after a full diet per person.
Place: Near Deccan, close to back side Garware College.

2. LBT( Lonely Banyan Tree)
-It's a place to find peace, after all your frustration, on your college, your project or anything. You will surely love this place. Its on way to a hill. You will find bikes parked there, that's how first time i found this place. Take something to eat and LBT!
It's around 6-7 km's from PICT campus, take the way to kondhwa and ask someone about singhad, kondhwa and straight from there to the hill.

3. Unnamed Place 1
-Not hard to find and easy refreshment after college hours. They have SEV PAV and SAMOSA PAV. Its on the way to BSNL office in the back side of college. To spot the place, again you will find many people standing + there is a tuition classes nearby. The place got no name.

4. Burger Barn
-A bit costly place, but easy to find. Lane 7, koregoan park near natural ice cream shop(hope you know this). The Place where you will find best burger in the city. If you are going there don't forget to add mozzarella cheese to whatever you are eating and the starters are just awesome. look at its menu .

5. Jagatbhari Kolhapuri
-People who like spicy food, this is a good place. They have only one thing in menu, the masoor dal and roti. Have curd and extra butter if you lover of good food but not spicy.
It's opposite to dominoes on satara road.
Avg cost 80 per person.

6. HOT( the name of place :)
-The way to this place is bit tricky. It's in wanowrie, near to Mc Donald's there. To spot, there is a big fueling station nearby.
It's good for small refreshment like pastries and bread stuff. Try veg paneer Kathi roll.

It is near Katraj Dairy, towards right near a big stationary.

A fine proposal

For those who are not familiar, from July 2010, our college PICT has framed a new rule. It goes as this, if you don't attend the college for a lecture or a practical you have to pay Rs 100/- for that. First list was on notice board on 2nd week after college started. We all thought that since NAAC is visiting college so they have put such notices on board (they even renovated some parts of the college), so we all ignored it. After 1st week fine they put up other notice about 2nd week fine and teachers started asking students to pay the same.

Finally, it was Monday (so called BLACK DAY in college history) 2nd August, everyone was asked to pay fine else not allowed to attend classes. Around 11AM all SE, TE and BE of computer science department were thrown out of their classes. All gathered in the main lobby first and then went away for the lunch at 12 noon. No one was in mood to pay fine and all were totally against this system. Meanwhile news came that, ENTC and IT department people had reluctantly paid their fine and were attending classes. So it was only comp dept fighting against the rule, but this was the day when we saw the real unity of the department. At 1PM, everyone was back, we had practical and our professors took the attendance and told us to pay fine before we sit. All SE and TE sections gathered in a single room and we finally decided not to pay FINE at any cost, because monetary penalty is never the solution for student. We all had many small meetings that day (in canteen at parking etc). The question being, till when? "kab tak fine bharenge".

Due to mass protest and no one paying the fine, even many of the trustees came to college that day. Having had enough, the Principal and VP called an urgent meeting in the auditorium. There was a huge discussion over all topics related to attendance, student performance, college reputation and what not, and also how students were in no mood to pay. At the end of the one hour debate, though, we realized that the other side of the table had played their cards superbly, diplomatically waiving off all protests. Inference – none. They told us blatantly to pay the fine for the 1st week, with the other two weeks’ fine kept on hold (as if we didn’t know what that meant). In between, teachers even tried to break through (that was the saddest part). Conversations I heard between one teacher and student

teacher:- why are you fighting for all?

student:- mam, we all are against the paying.

Teacher:- you have only 300 bucks fine. Pay it and other will automatically pay.
A teacher even told a student that she'll go and pay fine for him if he is afraid to go, I muttered wtf?( So that the system stays?)

The very next day BE people also protested, they sat on their knees in the department, till one of the senior teacher came and pleaded them to stop doing this and support college, if they do so, then junior's will also. Talk about putting up an example!

FE admissions are ongoing. While I was returning from college, a parent asked me about PICT, how it is, how are the placements, faculty (!), facilities (!) etc. I could just blankly stare at her.

Impetus and Concepts- DAY1

Impetus and Concepts or known as InC technical fest of PICT college started today with a small inauguration ceremony at our multi-purpose basketball ground with few famous people, something i remember from that is "Shayari's" by our Vice-Principal G.P.Potdar and the chief guest was from Sun-Gard.

I was part of OPUS competition so was there almost whole of the day. The judge of the same were our very own Colloquium Founder- MR. Atindriyo Sanyal.

Near by in the Computer Dept. was NIPUN(the gaming competition),, but sad was PC's provided by the college which cannot play the games even in low graphics settings( they had to manage with the same anyways) but the Xbox room was looking hot with that green lights.

Pradanya(c- competition) i guess had the maximum entires today with LOTS and LOTS of re-registration they earned handsome :)

Impetus was also going on somewhere in the college. Day 1 lacked enthusiast in the college..it was not looking like we are having a fest in the college.

Waiting 4 SHASTRA (the robotics competition) which i was part of last year and we have 2-3 bots from colloQuium this time also.

Colloquium Web Designing Team Picnic -> Hinjewadi

Well, my todays post is all about the 'HINJEWADI TOUR' that we (Colloq web team) went on 3rd october , 2009. It was awesome, unlike other outings, it was amidst some of the great I.T. bigwigs like IBM,TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Tech mahindra and many more.
We completed our website work on 2nd October (Happy gandhi Jayanti) and that night four of us (me, Amit, Sanchit and Param) decided to chill out. This time rather than going for places like hilltop or LBT we thought of making it altogether different and decided to go to Hinjewadi the I.T. Hub in Pune which was 25kms from our place. We decided to leave at 5 30 in the morning (this was adventure too).
We woke up at 5 30 as scheduled (man!! we woke up at 5 30) and six of us marched to hinjewadi we four platina and unicorn. Really driving on NH-4 was so much fun on a sunday morning. Sanchit had bought few mentos (so that dimaj ki batti jale). Having fun we were heading towards our destination. Midway we saw a truck had over-turned and then there was traffic jam. But we were not caught in it there was already a diversion made. Then driving driving ................. and sanchits PJ's atlast we reached HINJEWADI. Man!! it was awesome.
It started with KPIT Cummins, (not the cummins girls college) then there was Mindtree, I think it is KPIT's product. The kach ki buildings amused me. I felt like I was a host on Travel and Living show and eager to tell you'll my experience. We took first stop at Wipro where there were two ways. Wipro covered a large areahaving many short heighted buildings cream coloured. We clicked out some pictures in eshtyle. Then again taking a step forward we headed left from Wipro and then were, TCS and the Tech Mahindra. Tech Mahindra campus was large and i liked the Architecture. We did not have any permissions to go into the companies so the only alternative was to see them from out-side :( Further there was a fine stretch of road with a dead end. Sanchit and Param overjoyed. Because now they take a ride on the bike. They had some rounds of bike riding. I think they must have enjoyed.
Back on the way we then again went till Wipro. We were yet to see the shaan of Hinjewadi INFY. N then we were in front of the huge ' INFOSYS ' gate. I couldn't believe what i saw. I was like a Mushroom structure. It was simply great. The large stretch of buildings, glass domes were eye-catching.Further we saw IBM then, some samll IT companies and were back to highway.
Returning back with some nice memories of Hinjewadi. Everyone was feeling a little sleepy because we had woke up at 5 30 can you believe that 5 30. Back to PICT pohevala.
Had nice two plates of pohe some bhaji and backe to Amit's House. Oh !! How could I forget Sanchit bought a DNA.
Unlike any other outing in Pune this was something really special. The IT hub was appealing and it was really inspiring.

Ritche Rich in Night and Poha in Morning--- dats PL's

Epilogue:: """Students living near coll r prone 2 dis but localites, some big muggers n ppl living away hav still no idea dat dere's a famous "POHE WALLA" vich opens it shop damn at 5am in morning n sells wat is called da best"""

Well PL is da best time ven u can see da crowd in night. The coll gate is opened whole night n so is da library. It's full f muggers(still not much in da library, dey r mostly in their room's) and ppl who really enjoy coll lyf n dont giv a shit 2 exams.

Ritchie rich a famous shop just in front of coll ,, provide its services till 3-3.30 am. Coffee, sandwich,burger,ice-tea n many more thngs!!(it really includes many....not 2 mention!),, if u study late night (vich most of us dont, though v r awake till dat) it a heaven 4 u. Who dont like fuud at night and at da time u r trying 2 study.

Awaking whole night is easy but not on ur laptop, no mvie, no internet and on da whole you r trying 2 study 4 sem xams ,makes it impossible.

I cant say of everyone but what make me awakes whole night is the Coffee @ ritchie rich and poha at 5am.
The damn 10-12 night outs i tuk b4 exams wudnt have been dat easy without dem. It was mah skedule to hav a proper double hot coffee(not the espresso as dey dont provide) at 1am , so it was like studying frm 10-1am waiting 4 dat coffee n sumtimes sandwich wrks with it and den waiting for 5am in morning for "pohe walla" 2 open its shop.
I was like do nething but not 2 sleep b4 dat poha :D
You'll find many f ur colleages and seniors over dere, its famous its guud it rocks.
I have many times waited over dere 4 da guy 2 make so dat i can have the fresh one.(waise bhi i have a soft corner 4 poha frm last 2 yrs :)
Not to forget the juice wander who also cum by same time...he provides u the juices f real trees(try NEEM juice over dere, i bet u cant drink 2 glasses f it).

This is related 2 many ppl out there n many dont have a idea what da F m taking about,, still 2 me and many more " ITS THE WAY WE STUDY"" :P
