Recently, i made a shift to Ubuntu 10.10 maverick meerkat. The maverick is the adjective and meerkat is the animal. It was launched on 10th oct 2010 so version 10.10. They release a version every six months with small changes.
If you interested in knowing about other names of ubuntu versions.. have a look here.
Whats new?
1. The best thing i loved is the Ubuntu software center. A center for all your software needs..and obviously they all are free and open source.
2. The open office is still embedded, so no need to search for your word, pdf, excel, ppt etc documents.
3. The rhythm box is the inbuilt music player. It plays everything including online radio stations, podcast, last FM, and few more stuff. It gets embed into the volume control itself if closed.
4. Graphics is little tweaked, and looks better. Compiz config can be installed using Ubuntu software center.
5. The new default wallpaper and wall theme looks good.
Why Linux or say Ubuntu?
1. Faster-
With my PC configuration (p8600 2.4 ghz core 2 duo, 4GB of ram, 512 ATI radeon 4570 graphics card) it takes me around 45-55 seconds to boot my win 7 PC, freshly installed. And it takes 25-30 seconds to shutdown. Ubuntu 10 takes only 2 seconds to shut. The booting time is also better around 25 seconds + no time to start some services which hangs windows after booting a little.
2. Free-
Open source and free softwares.
3. Compatible-
Most of the windows softwares are compatible. You need to install wine for that.
4. Easy to use-
Its not that command line, that most of us use to hear about Linux. e.g. i hear once from someone that in Linux if you want to open CD drive than you have to write line of codes for that :P
5. Looks good-
Better graphics then windows and easy to manage them
6. Developer Friendly-
If you are developer than Linux is god for you. They have support for .net on Linux now. To know more about this click here MONO
It takes a little to shift permanently to Linux, you did not know windows from birth, its just that you are accustomed to it.
There are many Linux available but i prefer Ubuntu because of good support available at Ubuntu forums. Give it a shot and see the power.

Practical of TE comp
SPL
Most of us TEs would have heard about the professor who came as the external for the SPL (signal processing lab) viva. Well, here's a first person account of the same.
Day 1, scheduled to start at 9.00am, the dude walks in at 12.30. Till then, almost everyone was bored to the core. Whatever excitement or anticipation that the students had for the first viva of their engineering career, it had all but evaporated by then. Meanwhile, people outside, who had their exams the same day, were hungry to know how the first batches fared. We were making fun of them... until it was time, finally. Whatever happened next, was in no way, even close to fun.
He started taking close to half an hour for each set (2 students). His prime target was the files we make for our assignments. Everyone knows how we write files, so did he; and he wished to exploit it. He would scrutinise each and every page until he finds a mistake, and then either your file is in the air, or broken into pieces. Our internal supervisor, next day, tried to save few batches by taking their orals before he came. Some respite. Overall, about 30-40% boys (yes, gender specific) were asked to come again next time. And girls !, well, what to say, he was a totally different person to them. All goody, goody. Oh! God bless him.
RVPL
This was supposed to be the easiest practical ever for me, till i found out that maximum atkts were in this prac so far. Wonder why, it's so easy! First day, first batch, only 3 students were able to produce complete output, and i thought, yes, its is going to kill the students next day. The practice of asking other people about their practicals never helps, believe me. The pattern of TE practicals changes so fast, also, day 2 did not have any questions which were there on day 1. All you could get from students of day 1 was the answer to the question 'Are they giving change', and it was in a negative.
HL
By far, the easiest. People were getting changes if they asked, and most did. Even if they aren't able to perform, the internal is generous enough to pass most of them, if one has written some relevant code, which may not even work! 20 is good, if you are not able to compile or even remove errors
Last words, had the first viva of my life, and it was hell. There are most next semester, and this time, the assignment files are going to look better than this time. Lesson of the day, presentation matters a lot.

Clockwise or Anti-Clockwise ?
Do you see it turning clockwise or anti-clockwise ?
THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test ... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?
If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.
Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.
LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe
RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

You can change her direction and see her turning both clockwise and anti-clockwise, try to focus and concentrate on her feet and the shadows and may be you can.
