A fine proposal

For those who are not familiar, from July 2010, our college PICT has framed a new rule. It goes as this, if you don't attend the college for a lecture or a practical you have to pay Rs 100/- for that. First list was on notice board on 2nd week after college started. We all thought that since NAAC is visiting college so they have put such notices on board (they even renovated some parts of the college), so we all ignored it. After 1st week fine they put up other notice about 2nd week fine and teachers started asking students to pay the same.

Finally, it was Monday (so called BLACK DAY in college history) 2nd August, everyone was asked to pay fine else not allowed to attend classes. Around 11AM all SE, TE and BE of computer science department were thrown out of their classes. All gathered in the main lobby first and then went away for the lunch at 12 noon. No one was in mood to pay fine and all were totally against this system. Meanwhile news came that, ENTC and IT department people had reluctantly paid their fine and were attending classes. So it was only comp dept fighting against the rule, but this was the day when we saw the real unity of the department. At 1PM, everyone was back, we had practical and our professors took the attendance and told us to pay fine before we sit. All SE and TE sections gathered in a single room and we finally decided not to pay FINE at any cost, because monetary penalty is never the solution for student. We all had many small meetings that day (in canteen at parking etc). The question being, till when? "kab tak fine bharenge".

Due to mass protest and no one paying the fine, even many of the trustees came to college that day. Having had enough, the Principal and VP called an urgent meeting in the auditorium. There was a huge discussion over all topics related to attendance, student performance, college reputation and what not, and also how students were in no mood to pay. At the end of the one hour debate, though, we realized that the other side of the table had played their cards superbly, diplomatically waiving off all protests. Inference – none. They told us blatantly to pay the fine for the 1st week, with the other two weeks’ fine kept on hold (as if we didn’t know what that meant). In between, teachers even tried to break through (that was the saddest part). Conversations I heard between one teacher and student

teacher:- why are you fighting for all?

student:- mam, we all are against the paying.

Teacher:- you have only 300 bucks fine. Pay it and other will automatically pay.
A teacher even told a student that she'll go and pay fine for him if he is afraid to go, I muttered wtf?( So that the system stays?)

The very next day BE people also protested, they sat on their knees in the department, till one of the senior teacher came and pleaded them to stop doing this and support college, if they do so, then junior's will also. Talk about putting up an example!

FE admissions are ongoing. While I was returning from college, a parent asked me about PICT, how it is, how are the placements, faculty (!), facilities (!) etc. I could just blankly stare at her.

Divine Conflict

The conflict of humanity against divinity is divine one.Humans are really fortunate at the same time unfortunate. They are fortunate because they can have a glimpse of divine, can have an urge to attain it.At the same time they are unfortunate because as soon as they plan to start the journey, they have their own mechanism which stops them for doing so.This is the real fun.The same truth is being reflected from each and every thing. The whole cosmos echoes the same voice, but we cannot hear it.Even some time we manage to listen it,we pretend that we have not heard.I wonder….why this is so?I myself have observed that even if we start the journey, when we come at the very end of it,something locks up.And no one other is to be blamed for this. This is the coding….done within….the whole game deals with breaking this code. But when you are breaking the code,it is like you killing yourself…because on surface you are nothing but this code.Thats why enlightened one is called Dwija….the one who has taken birth for second time. So,man is really badly trapped.it is a divine plan.To know the divine is also a divine plan. And conflict between these two plans in a human being,is also a divine plan………

The power of Books

Books are the most versatile things on earth. It is amazing to know in what all ways books can help us. No wonder they are known as man’s best friends, second only to dogs!

Here listed below are some of the many uses of books. Check how many of them you can identify with.

  • The most primary and the most obvious use of books, even to those who can’t read, is weightlifting. It is really interesting how a bunch of papers, which negligible mass of their own, when combined, can compete with dumb-bells. The accomplished heavyweights being medical anthologies.
  • Books sometimes serve as secure treasure troves. Be it fresh 1000 Rs. notes or a rare leaf collected or the golden Dairy Milk wrappers, we always cherish them by storing them in huge books. The bigger the book, the crisper is the note, or the wrapper.
  • On one of those days, when you have friends at your place, and you want to play the turn-based board games; everything is all set up, except the most important thing – dice. Where else can a book be handy. You just flip the pages and stop at any random one; the units place digit of the page number is your number to move!
  • Books also are impressive canvases. Just recall all those days in class spent in sketching the most intricate drawings in every corner of book. Logos, sceneries, calligraphy of the highest order, and other such superb pieces that even you are amazed to know you created them, when you look back at them.
  • They serve as the perfect alibi. You are, say, in a library, checking out a girl/boy (choose your pick), and he/she suddenly catches you staring, you can always immerse yourself back into the book you are holding, feigning utmost concentration.
  • This one is not exactly a use, but just drawn out a similarity – alcoholic beverages. They can make you nauseous, make your head spin. Books too possess similar powers.
  • The last, and the best use. The most dependable, no-harm sleeping pills. That too, without any side-effects. The sleep, or nap, that you doze off into, while reading a particularly boring book, is the quickest, and the most blissful sleep one can ever have, right in the middle of the day. Try it, it’s the best you can experience. And, unlike pills, or alcohol, books are totally unaddictive!

I, myself, am an avid reader, and love reading books that enthrall me. So it be known, that the books mentioned here are the ones that are haplessly put onto us by the syllabus. The gigantic, totally non-arousing, downright creepy, and almost cruel syllabi texts one encounters. You know the kind.

My last 5 movies..must watch

College was over, submissions done. I haven't watched a movie from last many months, not because of college but i don't wanted to waste a hour and few mins for a movie which in end is found to be a piece of crap. But last five movies i watched were damn good and almost all were of same genre.

1. First was THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT, it was based on a paranormal activity. The movie makes a buffer of watching it complete, the end was as expected, but to my surprise the movie has 4 different endings, yup one movie with four endings!

2. Next in the list was THE PRESTIGE, movie about magicians. The movie has big names like Hugh Jackman(the wolverine) and Christian Bale(Batman), and is directed by none other than Christopher Nolan who had movies like The Dark Night and Memento.
The movie binds you all over as it flows, a complete movie with superb acted by both the jacks.

3. The third movie i watched was SHUTTER ISLAND, a complete movie. Before i was going to watch this movie i was warned by one of my friend that it should be seen only if you free and have your brain at right place. This movie don't let you think what could be the next!

4. The next movie was the Classic IMDB highest rated movie THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. The movie has no twist and turn but still its a good movie to watch, it makes you laugh, cry and everything, it has all of it. The movie is based on a guy who went to Shawshank prison for his redemption.

5. The Illusionist was next title for me, like prestige it was based on magician theme but a completely different movie. This movie take your nerves in the end, the best way to keep everything from audience and blast in last.

My personal rating for the movies would be:
1. The Prestige
2/3. Shutter Island and The Shawshank Redemption
4. The Illusionist
5. The Butterfly Effect

So if you are in mood to watch a movie, i recommend you to go watch the above list.

Impetus and Concepts- DAY1

Impetus and Concepts or known as InC technical fest of PICT college started today with a small inauguration ceremony at our multi-purpose basketball ground with few famous people, something i remember from that is "Shayari's" by our Vice-Principal G.P.Potdar and the chief guest was from Sun-Gard.

I was part of OPUS competition so was there almost whole of the day. The judge of the same were our very own Colloquium Founder- MR. Atindriyo Sanyal.

Near by in the Computer Dept. was NIPUN(the gaming competition),, but sad was PC's provided by the college which cannot play the games even in low graphics settings( they had to manage with the same anyways) but the Xbox room was looking hot with that green lights.

Pradanya(c- competition) i guess had the maximum entires today with LOTS and LOTS of re-registration they earned handsome :)

Impetus was also going on somewhere in the college. Day 1 lacked enthusiast in the college..it was not looking like we are having a fest in the college.

Waiting 4 SHASTRA (the robotics competition) which i was part of last year and we have 2-3 bots from colloQuium this time also.

The power of open source software

Open Source Software(OSS) is a software for which the source-code is issued under a license which permits it's users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. Most popular of such licenses is the GNU General Public License. Under the terms of the GPL, any person may obtain and change the code covered under the license, but must make those changes available at no charge to the world.

Open Source started out as a challenge to the monopoly of vendors of proprietary software. The movement started with GNU (which is, Gnu is Not Unix). In earlier days, UNIX was perhaps the most well known operating systems of the 70's in both academic and commercial circles. But given it's exorbitant price, very few institutions could afford it. Then, Linus Torvalds developed the Linux kernel, intending it to be a UNIX-like system, but without a price-tag. He made his system available for free to anyone who wants to use or develop it.

Since then, groups such as the Free Software Foundation have come up, and make software available to users for free. There is no single expert body looking after such software, but a whole community of every-day users who fix bugs and make their findings available to the entire community of open-source users .

For those new to the idea of open source or unfamiliar with the way software gets developed, here's how it works most of the time:

  • One or more developers--meaning people who have the skills to create software--get an idea about creating software to solve a problem.

  • The developers start writing code to create a solution. This is frequently called "scratching an itch."

  • The developers put this code where other developers can find out about it, download it, and play with it. There are many locations, such as SourceForge.com, where people post their projects.

  • Usually the source code is published under one of several popular open source licenses that ensure that the source code and any derivative works remain open source.

  • Through an informal process of sharing ideas, fiddling with each others' code, and trial and error, the software gets better and better, sometimes changing direction to solve new problems as new people discover the software.

  • At some point, the software gets finished or doesn't. It becomes popular, stays obscure, or fades away. Programs like Linux and Apache have had thousands of contributors. Other projects have been created by one or two people.

  • As time goes on, developers come and go, and projects become active or dormant.

A huge amount of amazing software has been created through this loose process. All developers may not be experts- most are amateurs, but as the open source adage goes, "given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow" .

Running Graphics-C in windows 7 or Vista

DOSBOX VIEW

I have seen many people struggling over this so just thought to write a small post over this. Most of the SE students are working with the C-graphics and must be finding problem because of the operating system they are using.
One of the two ways is(that i know):
1. Install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 which is free of cost and plant MS XP in that. Dos mode works fine in XP.
2. I feel this one is better than the 1st one
Download a freeware Dos-box from here .
It's a emulator for dos ....provide a 16bit envoirment. Install the dos-box and open it.
You have to write following lines whenever you start the dos-box which opens just like a normal app.
-- Mount the drive in which you have turbo-C
For example i have turbo-C complier at location C:\tc\bin

so i write
mount c c:\
c:
cd tc
cd bin
tc
Have attached a pic of the same at top.

and you are done with it.
Use the Compiler as you use on a 16-bit machine.
